The chase began at 2:46 a.m. Sunday when a deputy tried to pull over a vehicle that was clocked at 97 miles per hour on Highway 27.  The chase went northbound on County Road K from Highway 27.

Chief Deputy Craig Faulstich says the suspect vehicle reached speeds over 100 miles per hour before the driver, a 24-year-old Northwoods Beach man, apparently lost control and crashed into trees near Norway Pines.  The pursuit went about four miles.

The driver was taken into custody and, after an evaluation by emergency responders, was taken to the Hayward hospital and then transferred to Duluth.  His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver faces possible charges of fleeing an officer, operating a motor vehicle under the influence (first offense), and open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.
