Keeping kids active during the winter can be a challenge but the Young Athletes Foundation is helping with that by hosting a series of free youth races.

Several kids enjoyed the "Saturday Morning at the Races” event at the University of Wisconsin-Superior(UWS) where children ages 14 and under participated in a fun race around the indoor track of the Marcovic Wellness Center.

"We're ecstatic with the turnout today. We probably have almost 300 participants. Just looking at the crowds that we have here on a day that is below zero is fantastic,” Greg Haapala, the race director, said.

The wheelchair division and ages six and under did a 1/8 mile.

Ages seven through 10 did a 1/4 mile.

Ages 11 through 14 did a 1/2 mile.

Participants received a t-shirt and sticker for competing in the race.

The Young Athletes Foundation is a Grandma's Marathon program focused on promoting healthy and active lifestyles for kids.

There’s a total of three races for the "Saturday Morning at the Races" series.

The first race was hosted on Jan. 5 at the College of St. Scholastica. Saturday’s race at UWS marked the second race and a third one will be hosted on Feb. 9 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
