On Wednesday afternoon, the transformation of the old Younkers store in Duluth's Miller Hill Mall to Essentia Health's new health facility was being celebrated.

A ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the opening of the Essentia Health Miller Hill Health Plaza, which consists of both a therapy and fitness center. The therapy center is specifically for patients who are rehabbing while the fitness center is open to the public.

Officials say the therapy center offers higher ceilings and more equipment than the old one. It also includes a therapy pool.

The fitness center has free weights, treadmills, cardio, and strength training machines as well as an aerobic studio.

'It's lovely. It's lovely. It's much larger than the old one, and the windows create an openness about it. The old facility was adequate, but this is so much more open," said Terry Clark of Duluth.

"It's nice and spread out. The elliptical stuff isn't crammed in the little hot sweaty humid room anymore. The locker rooms are much, much better. Much larger you're not on top of each other all the time," said Jon Anderson of Duluth.

Construction of the therapy and fitness centers was completed around four weeks ago. The total cost was about $14 million.

The Essentia Health Miller Hill Health Plaza technically opened on Monday, but Wednesday was the grand opening.

It is replacing the facility on Second Street, which will then be demolished. Officials say the move was necessary to make room for Essentia's replacement hospital.

Essentia officials say they are still reviewing what future services will be available in the rest of the old Younkers property.
