19 businesses are taking part, according to the Greater Downtown Council, which sponsors the contest.

Salon Capelli took home an award last year, and plans on a repeat. Owner Nan Bodell-Moen said, "We are going with a retro theme this year. It's fun to see how excited customers are about the window displays, and all the great support we get from people walking down the street."

The handiwork will be unveiled on Friday. Then people can start voting for their favorites!

Here's a list of the participating businesses:

A & L Properties, Art in the Alley, CSL Plasma Services, Duluth Area Family YMCA, Duluth Coffee Company, Duluth Pack, Duluth Trading Company, Electric Fetus, Fitger's, Grandma's Marathon, Lake Superior Art Glass, Lester River Trading Co, Market Day Duluth, Minnesota Power, Minnesota Surplus & Outfitters, PS Rudie, Salon Capelli, Tischer Photographic Gallery and Whimsy.
