A celebration for the new Quad Cities Food Shelf brought people together on Friday.

For 40 years, it used to be in Gilbert. But the building was aging and needed expensive repairs. So the shelf, under the umbrella of AEOA, started looking for a new space.

They found one at 8367 Enterprise Drive North in Mt. Iron. And clients are pleased with the upgrade. "They say it's bigger, and brighter, and they are very excited," shared volunteer Brenda Foosness.  "They get fresh produce and meat, too. They are happy and blessed."

Food comes from Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank and grocery stores.

This project required renovations to accommodate the food shelf and thrift store operations.

A $25,000 grant from the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation helped with the renovation. Other mining companies and organizations helped with the project and support the shelf. It opened in its new spot in the fall.

Karl Oberstar, the shelf coordinator, said they serve around 600 families a month. "We've seen an uptick, in the new location. It's easier for some folks to get here," he said.

About 50 volunteers work hard to keep the shelf running. Many came to the open house celebration on Friday.

"In an ideal world, we wouldn't be here," Sonya Simonson, a volunteer, told the crowd. "But we are helping our neighbors."

Artwork from Eveleth-Gilbert students helped decorate the refrigerator sections.

The food shelf is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am-4pm.
