Mail carriers are known for delivering in snow rain, heat, and "gloom of night" - but the unofficial creed of the U.S. Postal Service has no mention of bitter cold.

So it's appropriate, then, that the Postal Service will not deliver mail Wednesday in much of the Upper Midwest due to the extremely cold weather conditions.

Mail will not be delivered or picked up Wednesday in Minnesota, western Wisconsin, Iowa, or western Illinois.  The suspension includes residential, business, and collection boxes, as well as residential and commercial package pickup services.

Post offices will still be open, but retail operations may be limited.
