Suburban Milwaukee police said a shooter was still at large Friday evening after eight people were injured in a mass shooting at a mall.

The shooting happened at around 2:50 p.m. at the Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. Police Chief Barry Weber says the shooter was no longer at the scene when emergency personnel arrived.

According to a police news release, seven injured adults and one injured teenager were taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, but video from a WISN-TV news helicopter showed that many of the people were conscious as they were taken out of the mall on stretchers.

Witnesses described the shooter as a white man in his 20s or 30s. Weber said investigators are working to determine the shooter's identity.

The Wauwatosa Police Department said Friday night that they do believe the shooting was part of a fight, not random.

The FBI's Milwaukee office was one of numerous area agencies that responded to help support local law enforcement's tactical response.

The Mayfair Mall was the site of a shooting in February in which a city police officer, Joseph Mensah, shot and killed Alvin Cole, a Black 17-year-old. Police said Cole was fleeing from police; Mensah, who also is Black, said he shot Cole because Cole pointed a gun at him. The mall was the target of sporadic protests over several months in the wake of the shooting.

The mall says it will remain closed on Saturday, Nov. 21.
