Filled with helium, the High Altitude Research Weather Balloon launched into the sky on Monday afternoon.

Underneath were excited Piedmont Panthers, who worked on a variety of science experiments that were attached to the balloon. One is a volcano!

There is also a tracker attached, so the teacher can go pick up the balloon. And GoPro cameras are going to capture the several hour journey. It was expected to land in Wisconsin.

Essentia Health and St. Louis County underwrite the project, which is part of the Duluth Airshow Educational Outreach program.

There have also been launches in Ely and at Marshall.
