The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says 34-year-old Vernon Andrew John May of Red Lake died of multiple gunshot wounds.  The BCA says Bemidji Police Officer Bidal Duran and Deputy Brandon Newhouse discharged their firearms.

The shooting came after a traffic stop at 30th Street NW and Ridgeway Avenue late Wednesday night.  May was a passenger in the vehicle and was the subject of a felony warrant.

The Bemidji Police Department said that May had a handgun and that the officers struggled with the suspect for control of the gun before discharging their duty weapons.  Police said the BCA recovered a handgun at the scene.

Duran has been with the police department for nearly six years.  Newhouse has been with the sheriff's office for two years.  Both are on administrative leave, which is a standard practice, while the investigation is conducted.

The BCA is conducting an investigation and will turn over its findings to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office to consider whether charges should be filed in the case.
