New statistics released Tuesday show the job market is continuing a slow recovery in northeastern Minnesota, but local unemployment rates remain at their highest levels in nearly a decade.

The numbers released by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development show an increase in 524 jobs for the six-county Arrowhead Economic Development Region from June to July, and an overall increase in 3,574 jobs since April. However, the 147,089 jobs that existed in the region in July were 13,004 fewer than were found in the region one year earlier.

Unemployment rates fell in every northeastern Minnesota county and city from June to July, continuing to recover from highs recorded in the spring. In the six northeastern counties, rates ranged from a low of 7.3% in Aitkin County to a high of 9.4% in Lake County.

The jobless rate for the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes St. Louis, Douglas, and Carlton counties, was 8.7%. Other local figures for Wisconsin are due for release Wednesday.

Local unemployment rates are not adjusted for normal seasonal variations.
