A nationwide search for UMD's next chancellor yielded no hire.

University of Minnesota system president Joan Gabel announced that an interim chancellor will be appointed to a two-year term. People are invited to make nominations

"I imagine this news will inspire a range of emotions, but ultimately, it is an opportunity," Gabel said in an email. "The selection of UMD's 10th chancellor is vitally important to me, my senior leadership team, our University System, the City of Duluth (which celebrated its formal incorporation 165 years ago last week), the State of Minnesota, and the world."

Nominations for the interim role will be accepted through June 3, and Gabel said she hopes to announce the appointee by the end of June.

Chancellor Lendley Black is retiring.
