It's been a busy few weeks at F&D Meats for the new owner, John Walls. He's been learning the ropes from the employees who stayed. "I'm owner and apprentice right now," he joked on Friday.

He praised former owners, Tom O'Bryan and Todd Schaefbauer, for their hard work building the customer base and reputation.

"For us to be able to keep the legacy going, is important. We have some very big boots to fill. In northern Minnesota, I'd say it's like Paul Bunyan sized boots. And to make this the same success that it has been," he shared.

Walls is from International Falls, but also spent time in the cities.

"Being both from northern Minnesota and having spent the second half in the Twin Cities, I think I've got a lot to bring to the table. I'm coming into this really feeling like my family and I have come home," Walls said.

He has a wife and four kids, and sometimes they come down and help out at the shop. He's looking forward to the future.

"I want to keep the produce department looking fresh, and introduce a few new things. Our grocery offerings are going to increase. So people can come for the meat and stay for everything else," he added. "I keep taunting Todd about bringing on chorizo."
