Every child deserves to feel safe and nurtured and have the opportunity to grow in a supportive environment.

Many Northland children are in need of fostering, and foster families need support to do so.

New Hope For Families is striving to provide that, and it all started with a trip to Renosa, Mexico.

"We spent a week at the rio bravo ministry, which was started by a man from Chicago some 30 years ago," New Hope Co-founder Therese Gruba said. "He had a desire to help the children who were wandering on the streets. And he founded a community of homes."

Gruba was moved by how many children needed love and care, and she knew that needed to be extended to the Northland too.

"I looked at that and thought it would be so amazing if we could find a way to work together with the system in the United States that's already in place with foster care and adoption and work together as communities around foster families," she said.

The need in St. Louis County is great, not just for supporting the children but also the foster families. That's where New Hope For Families comes in.

"Our specific mission is to recruit more foster families and support them," Gruba said. "Foster families can affiliate themselves with New Hope For Families for the support."

They support 20 families now and hope to help even more with their new center in Duluth being renovated.
