The mom who left a 6-year-old on the side of Hwy 61 without shoes has been charged.
Jaydin Danielle Pankow of Waupaca, Wis., faces a felony charge of neglect or endangerment of a child.
The criminal complaint says Cook County deputies got a call about a child on Hwy 61 in the Grand Portage area. She was not dressed for the near-freezing weather.
When deputies arrived, the girl was in the vehicle of the people who found her. She was wearing tights, a jacket, no shoes and no hat. The people who found her gave her a pair of socks.
The 39-year-old mom allegedly told the child, "Have faith, and God bless you."
Authorities arrested Pankow driving a blue van east on Hwy 61. During an interview, she told them "God told her to leave the child on the highway in order to save her."
Judge Michael Cuzzo ordered her to undergo a competency evaluation. There is a review hearing scheduled for Feb. 22.
If convicted, Pankow is looking at five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
