Sometimes, state lines and red tape can get in the way of health care. "It does become a barrier for people in Wisconsin to get care in Duluth," shared Traci Marciniak, president of the Miller-Dwan Foundation.

So the foundation, Essentia, and its partners like UWS worked together to make changes in Superior.

Tucked in the lower level of the Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital in Superior is a new place for mental health help.

It's a partial hospitalization program. And it's three weeks of intense help, that have helped hundreds of people since it began.

"They come here during the day, and learn the skills they need to manage their emotions and regulate. And then go home in the evening to practice those skills with families, and have their families support them through this process," Marciniak explained.

Along with individual sessions, there's also plenty of getting together in groups.

They opened right before the pandemic hit. And the need for mental health services has only grown. So the foundation and its partners are not done yet, and plan on looking for more solutions.

"Working together, as a group, we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of people who live here," Marciniak added.

The foundation is being recognized by the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation with a Touchstone Award.

WDIO will be featuring more award winners this fall.
