Standing in front of the Mike Colalillo exhibit at Veterans Memorial Hall, Courtney Werner received the scholarship named for the Medal of Honor winner.

The $1500 will help her pursue her degree in elementary education at the University of North Dakota. She's a senior at Proctor, along with her twin brother.

For the scholarship, she wrote an essay about her great-grandfather, Thomas Werner, who was a medic during WWII. His unit was stationed in the Pacific. "He always told me about his pet monkey that he had in New Guinea. I'd love hearing about that pet monkey," she said.

To learn more details about his service, she spent time with her grandpa, who would fill in the blanks.

Werner also learned more about Mike Colalillo. "It's so cool that somebody from this area was awarded such a high honor, and it's super amazing, and shows patriotism in the Duluth area," she added.

She plans on being in the ROTC program to become an officer in the United States Army.
