Sunday morning, over a dozen locals helped tidy up a local beach as part of an international coastal clean up initiative.

Members of Temple Israel in Duluth gathered at the Rose garden, picking up trash from 10 a.m. to noon.

The synagogue has done beach cleanups for years as a way of celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.

"There are many commandments in Jewish teaching and one of them is to take care of the earth, and that's what we're doing here," said temple member, Linda Glaser.

This beach sweep was done in partnership with Alliance for the Great Lakes using supplies provided by the city of Duluth. In total, twenty-three pounds of trash was collected.
