The Maurices headquarters in Duluth had a day of giving back to the community with their 6th annual Best Day Ever effort Thursday.

The effort is a day the fashion clothing retailer closes down its office to serve the community. Maurices employees volunteered their time to help 13 local nonprofits. Volunteers were out in about in Duluth and at the Maurices office making a difference by doing good deeds for the community.

“Giving back means so much to people at Maurices, it’s my favorite day,” said George Goldfarb, the Maurices president and CEO.

The day is dedicated to making one day out of the year the best day ever for those in need in the community.

The Maurices headquarters was packed with volunteers making blankets for the Essentia Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center Program. The blankets will be delivered to Essentia Friday along with a $500 check for the program.

Volunteers also made special care packages with Blue Star Mothers of America for troops deploying in the fall from the region.

“The most requested items for soldiers overseas are actually treats! We have candy, rice krispie bars. They wanted something for their food to taste better so we have hot sauce, peanut butter and ketchup packets too,” said Ashley Balaich, a longtime Maurices volunteer.

The boxes were packed with other items like socks, air deodorizers, face wipes, and more. The boxes come with handmade cards and gift cards. The care package effort means a lot to Balaich.

“I have really strong military connections with my family. Pretty much every male in my family has served in some way in multiple branches. It really is a way for me to feel like I’m honoring them and also honoring what everyone else goes through,” said Balaich.

Maurices also rewarded 10 deserving women with a makeover and special shopping experience by assigning them a personal stylist.

Community Action Duluth selected the women for making strides in their personal and professional lives.

“It means a lot. I mean, when do we ever get a chance to pick out 25 pieces of clothing? Like really, when does that happen!” said Mercedes Sheard, a recipient of the effort. “I never get a knock on the door about that!”

The women selected have gone through a lot so Maurices made sure they felt pampered and appreciated.

“It’s wonderful to women, looking at us as women to treasure and think how important it is to make people feel special,” said Kobreina Carlson, a recipient of the effort.

Maurices also stopped by Life House to set up a free fashion boutique for struggling youth that get assistance at Life House. Hundreds of clothing items were donated to the youth organization.

“It’s just great to support the community that’s really what it comes down to. It’s very rewarding for our associates. Giving back means so much for them,” said Goldfarb.

Maurices also served lunch at the Damiano Center and helped clean up local parks.

This year all 935 Maurices stores in the U.S. and Canada participated in the Grand Give Day by hosting a Denim Drive. Each store chose a local nonprofit to give a denim donation to.
