Man Fatally Shot by Law Enforcement in Suburban Twin Cities

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) - Anoka County sheriff's officials say a man has been fatally shot by law enforcement following a traffic stop in Coon Rapids.

Police Chief Brad Wise says a man got out of the vehicle that was stopped by one of his officers and a physical confrontation began. Wise says the man fled on foot and fired gunshots as the officer pursued him.

Officers from multiple agencies responded and set up a perimeter as they searched for the man. Authorities say about 30 minutes later a police dog and its handler located the suspect hiding in the backyard of a residence.

Wise says officers believed the man posed a deadly threat to them and open fire, killing him. The chief says a handgun was recovered at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
