A U.S. man faces several charges in Canada after allegedly failing to stop at the Pigeon River border crossing on Wednesday morning.

Thirty-nine-year-old Michael Melichar of La Grange Park, Illinois, was arrested after officers pulled his vehicle over about 36 kilometers (22 miles) north of the border crossing on Highway 61 at Boy Scout Road, south of Thunder Bay.  Ontario Provincial Police say Melichar was arrested after a brief standoff.

He had allegedly driven through the Pigeon River customs checkpoint without stopping at about 9:11 a.m. Eastern time.  The border crossing is the one used by people traveling from Minnesota's North Shore to Thunder Bay.

Authorities have not said why Melichar didn't stop.

Melichar is charged with assault of a peace officer while carrying an imitation of a weapon, possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, and use of an imitation firearm while committing an offense.  He was being held at the Thunder Bay District Jail as of Thursday.
