24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda was charged Monday with attempted premeditated first-degree murder in Friday's attack. The child is fighting for his life in a Minneapolis hospital with head trauma and multiple broken bones, after falling nearly 40 feet.

The complaint filed in Hennepin County says the child and his mother were standing outside a restaurant when Aranda came close to them, picked up the child and threw him over the balcony without warning. Aranda then took off running. Police located him on a light rail train at the mall waiting for it to depart, and placed him under arrest with no opposition.

Aranda told police he had planned to kill an adult that day, because they usually stand near the balcony, but chose the young boy instead. Aranda also said he was aware that what he was doing was wrong.

The complaint says Aranda told police he had been coming to the mall for several years seeking to talk to women, but had been rejected and it caused him to lash out. The complaint says Aranda had previously been trespassed from the mall for throwing water in a woman's face and destroying property.

Bail was set for $2 million. Aranda faces 20 years to life in prison. His first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
