As teachers gather in St. Paul for the annual Minnesota Educator Academy (MEA) conference, students and their families get to enjoy a 4 day weekend.

Ivan Anheluk and his family from Excelsior, Minnesota used the extended weekend to head up to the Twin Ports. "It's a great opportunity to get the kids outside exploring and taking in everything there is to offer." Anheluk said, "We're just starting out the journey today, taking in Canal Park, then we're hoping to get some hikes in while the weather is nice, so we hope to head up north a little further."

Local businesses get a boost from this final push of the tourist season, and they treat Thursday and Friday of MEA like a true weekend.

North Shore Scenic Railroad general manager Ken Buehler said, “This weekend is probably the last big weekend of that summer/fall get away for people.”

Glensheen has extended their hours and the North Shore Scenic Railroad is running their Great Pumpkin Train.

"People take the train, they go to the pumpkin field, they pick out a pumpkin that they like, they get to take that home with them," Buehler said.
