DULUTH, Minn. - The Leif Erikson Viking ship has been taken out of storage and moved to Canal Park ahead of this weekend's Festival of Sail.

The ship has been in storage for years as the Save Our Ship nonprofit fundraises for a permanent display structure.

It will be temporarily on display on land in the Grandma's Sports Garden parking lot during the festival, and Save Our Ship volunteers will be selling T-shirts and taking donations.

The ship sailed across the Atlantic, wintered in New York, and made it up the Great Lakes in 1927. It was moved out of Leif Erikson Park in 2013 for repairs.

Save Our Ship has hopes it will return to the Leif Erikson Park area in the future.

WDIO will be streaming the Parade of Sail Sunday morning from 9 - 11 on, Facebook Live and YouTube. Watch the tall ships sail out on Lake Superior and then parade through the ship canal.

Then on Monday, join us as we broadcast LIVE from the deck of the US Brig Niagara during WDIO News at Five and Six.
