The Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth named its Police Officer of the Year, Todd Shermer, and Firefighter of the Year, Matt Swanson, Wednesday.

Shermer just retired from the force at the end of October.

"I was in a completely separate career for 22 years, became a police officer at the age of 44 and was able to work for Duluth for a little over 16 years," he said, "and I don't regret it for a second."

Swanson said he got the award because he is surrounded by good people.

"It's not a job for me," he said. "This is a total calling in my world, for me, my little bubble that I live in. I don't wake up and go, 'Oh, I have to go to work.' I'm kind of excited every morning to show up."
