2 Kids, Adult Injured in Itasca Co. Boat Explosion

Two children and an adult suffered first- and second-degree burns during a boat explosion and fire in Itasca County.

A 911 caller reported the explosion on Big Turtle Lake, near Bigfork, at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday.  The caller indicated that two children wearing life jackets were thrown from the boat, and two adults jumped from the boat.

Bystanders and staff from the Arcadia Lodge were able to pull the victims from the water and bring them safely to shore, and Bigfork Ambulance then transported them the Bigfork hospital for treatment.  The names and hometowns of the people who were injured were not released.

Sheriff Vic Williams said the boat wreckage was pulled safely to shore and the fire was extinguished, resulting in no environmental impact.

The sheriff's office is investigating the cause fo the explosion and fire.  Williams said operator impairment was not a factor.

Williams issued a statement thanking Arcadia Lodge staff and bystanders for their quick thinking and response to those in the time of need.

Bigfork Ambulance, the Bigfork and Grand Rapids fire departments, and Life Link III assisted the sheriff's office.
