While some folks were down at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday to catch the Minnesota Boys' High School State Hockey Championship, others chose to stay on the Iron Range to watch the championship.

The Iron Range was filled with folks wearing green attire to show off their raiders pride for Greenway.

Fans at the Wizard's Bar in Nashwauk were full of high energy as the game was starting.

"They're going to do their best, it's going to be a good game and it's going to be unbelievable,” Steve Ostrander, a Nashwauk native and longtime Greenway Raiders fan, said. “I think it’s awesome that Greenway made it this far. They really did their best this whole year.”

"They got a lot of respect from the community you know, and how they handle themselves, so that plays a big role in how the coaching is and how the community is,” Chad Rutherford, a Greenway High School alumni and fan, said.

Emotions were through the roof halfway through the game. Greenway fans at the Locker Room Bar & Grill in Coleraine were still staying positive and rooting hard for the team.

"Your nerves are so jangled but you know how it is, it comes down to the last minute so it can really go either way. We are just really hoping it goes our way," Robin Hakala, a Greenway High School alumni and fan, said.

This is the raiders first time in the state tournament since 2001. It’s been almost 20 years, but that hasn't stopped loyal fans from supporting the team through thick and thin.

"The pride that this place takes in hockey is unbelievable. For such a little school, there's such a great power and it just means so much,” Hakala said.

The game unfortunately didn’t end in the raiders favor. The championship game against the crusaders from St. Cloud Cathedral was a battle, with a final score of 5-2.

However, fans in the Iron Range weren't focused on the loss. Instead, they were reflecting on the team's resurgence this year and on how far they made it.

"Greenway is a really good hockey organization. I think they just get stronger and stronger from here on over," Ostrander said.

"We bleed green up here and we just love our hockey up here. They did so great and we are so proud of them,” Ron Maki, the owner of Locker Room Bar & Grill and a Greenway High School alumni, said. "They had a long and hard season. They've done good and they pulled through the end when it mattered most."
