HIBBING - The Hibbing community now has a fresh, new-looking community basketball court in Bennett Park thanks to the Minnesota Timberwolves and U.S. Bank.

There was a ribbing cutting ceremony around 3:15 Wednesday afternoon to officially unveil the court to the public. Hibbing was picked by a community vote to receive it, and it was finished just a couple days ago.

Hibbing received the refurbished court as part of the Timberwolves "Our Courts. Our Future" program presented by U.S. Bank.

Community members were able to try it out for the first time, and were joined by former Minnesota Timberwolves Troy Hudson and Greg Stiemsma.

"Being able to have a really nice outdoor court to come practice and play on especially during the offseason when you don't have practice every day is super nice to have," said Leah Blomquist, a Wayzata community member.

Blomquist comes up to Hibbing in the summer to visit her grandparents. She has seen both the old and new court, and says there's no comparison.

"It's super nice with glass backboards, and it's paved, and there's no cracks in it for you to trip on," said Blomquist "It's pretty much as good as an indoor gym," she said.

And it's kids like Blomquist that the Timberwolves organization is looking to help.

"It really provides an opportunity for young people to get out and instead of sitting inside and playing Fortnite all day, it challenges each other, so what you see now behind (at the park) us is people just coming together as a community and sharing the love of basketball," said John Thomas, Timberwolves & Lynx Community Engagement Vice President.

Former Timberwolves point guard Troy Hudson remembers where it all began for him, so he understands what it means to have a court to play on.

"Playing on the playground is where I really found a love for basketball, so just to come back and give back and have someone else be able to have the opportunity to find the same love that I did, it's what you're supposed to do," said Hudson.

The court in Hibbing is one of four courts being refurbished statewide, and was the winning one in Northern Minnesota.

There will also be refurbished courts in St. Paul, Hastings, and St. Cloud.
