"Over the next two days, we've finished up with the pavement markings and the sod and the top sale just getting it ready for when traffic is on it on Friday afternoon," said Krasaway

Krasaway says the intersection at Maple Grove Road and Midway Road was one of the county's most dangerous intersections.  He says they looked at several options and even did a study on how to fix it, and installing the single-lane roundabout proved to be the safest.

"There's a lot of accidents and a lot of close calls at this intersection," said Krasaway. "In the Duluth and Hermantown area, traffic signals are where the most fatalities actually occur so a roundabout is a much better and safer way to get traffic through these high-speed busy intersections."

Come Friday, vehicles traveling on the road will have signs to help them navigate through it.

"People will see signs warning of the roundabout. You'll see the posted speed limit signs for it so just approach it with caution, look and just yield to vehicles as you enter and just make your way around. It should be easy," said Krasaway.

As far as feedback, it's been mixed.

"A lot of people are just very nervous about a new kind of traffic control system in the Duluth area," said Krasaway. "I think once they use it, they'll see how easy it is."

Krasaway says Hermantown's roundabout is the first ,but won't be the last.

"As Midway Road is one of the major truck corridors around the Duluth area, we are actually looking at installing another roundabout on Midway Road and Highway 194, about 2 miles north of here, in 2022. It's kind of the new way of doing things," Krasaway said.

The roundabout is scheduled to open at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
