Head-on crash kills two in remote area near Ignace

Ontario Provincial Police say two people died in a head-on crash on a remote stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway early Thursday morning.

The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Highway 17 in Dewan Township, about 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Ignace.

According to an OPP news release, two westbound tractor-trailer units and one eastbound tractor-trailer unit collided. Two occupants of one of the westbound vehicles were killed. Occupants of the other vehicles suffered serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The names of those involved were not immediately released since family members were still being notified.

The cause is still under investigation.  The highway remained closed more than 12 hours after the crash for the investigation.
