A 55-year-old Ely man was killed Tuesday in Eagles Nest Township in northeastern Minnesota. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to 1415 Walsh Road just before 5pm on a report that a male had fallen approximately 20 feet.

When officers arrived they found Hans Christopher Smith unconscious on the ground. Smith had been on the roof removing a downed tree from the property owners home and lost his footing. Officers say he fell nearly 20 feet onto a propane tank.

First responders on scene attempted CPR, but were unsuccessful. Smith died at the scene due to his injuries.

The Eagles Nest Fire/First Responders, Tower Ambulance, North Air Care and St. Louis County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.
