The celebration was for the new 4,000 square-foot Samuel C. Johnson Family Outdoor Center that will go up near Seeley.

The site will serve as headquarters for members of the community who enjoy participating in a variety of silent sports, as well as the popular Birkie events.

"Here we really want to create a venue that people can come to throughout the community, throughout the year, to just be active outside," said American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, Executive director, Ben Popp. "If you want to gather here to go cross country ski, hike, bike, whatever it might be, we really want this to be that gathering point, sort of the gateway to come, to go outside, be active, have a great time and then come back and gather afterwards."

Popp also said that silent sports, including Birkie events, provide over an estimated $20-million economic impact to northwest Wisconsin alone.
