UWS Hosts Veteran Student Appreciation Training

Updated: November 08, 2018 06:51 PM

UWS is recognized as a veteran friendly campus. The university hosted several events throughout the week for Veterans Day.

A Green Zone Training was hosted Thursday at Swenson Hall. The event gave faculty, staff, and students an update on military culture and a lesson on the unique experiences student veterans bring to the campus.

Common military terminology and tips on how to engage with veteran students were key points of the presentation.

"A lot of veterans do have a broad life experience compared to traditional peers on campus so being able to talk about what they want to bring to the classroom I think can enhance the learning experience for everybody,” Monte Stewart, the services coordinator for the UWS Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center, said.

Attendees took notes and participated in an open dialogue on challenges student veterans face. There was also guidance on how to give veteran students a sense of belonging and other help on campus as they transition to civilian life.
