Driver Dies After Crash into Lake in Grand Rapids

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal crash in Grand Rapids.

Police sent a statement saying that around 3am on Wednesday, neighbors reported a vehicle crashing into Crystal Lake. This happened at the T-intersection of Crystal Lake Boulevard and Pokegama Avenue.

The statement said a female passenger was able to get out of the vehicle, and was helped ashore by residents. Within 3 minutes, officers were at the scene, and swam out to rescue the male driver. However, they were not able to, and he was found in the car, deceased. The Itasca County dive team and the Rapids fire department also responded.

The names of the two people have been released. Police said the driver was Jacob Duffney, 24, of Aitkin. The passenger was Savannah Hegdahl, 22, of Keewatin.

Investigators said that Hegdahl is being treated at the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening. 

The State Patrol, Itasca County Sheriff, and police are all working together on this joint investigation.
