The statewide rate was 82.7% in 2017, the highest rate on record, and was up from 82.5% in 2016.

The numbers for Duluth Denfeld High School increased 6.5% from 73.9% in 2016 to 80.4% in 2017.

Amy Starzecki, Duluth Public Schools Assistant Superintendent, says Denfeld High School received a grant to help black and American Indian students in special education programs.

She says the grant has been targeted to help those students increase their graduation rates.

"It's really a strategy to build relationships, build connections with kids, with families and be a liaison for students with the classroom teachers to monitor grades, attendance, behavior, and look at any barriers to learning to try to be a support to those students," said Starzecki.
