Gaelynn Lea loves working with kids. So Monday's performances at Bay View Elementary were right up her alley.

"A lot of my jobs in the past involved being around kids. And the reason I got into music in the first place, is that an orchestra came to my elementary school. I think it's really important that musicians play in schools, and kids can see what's possible," she shared.

She's a Classic Notes Concerts artist this year. It's a program through YourClassical MPR that reaches tens of thousands of students across Minnesota.

Lea showed the kids how she uses a looping pedal, to help make some of her music. She also explained how she has brittle bone disease, which is why she plays a violin but holds it like a cello.

Her messages also included how anyone can be a songwriter, you just need to write down your ideas. "The thing about music is that it's really a safe and healthy way to feel your emotions."

Lea will be performing at Pike Lake Elementary on Friday. This is the fourth year she's done the Class Notes program.
