"The use is going up, instead of down. And food is going really fast when you serve a lot of families a month," Leslie explained. She's the Emergency Service Coordinator. "It could be your neighbor next door, who is living paycheck to paycheck, and is out of food and needs to use the food shelf."

We asked what they need. She said the basics, like spaghetti, peanut butter, soups, and mac and cheese. "Things that you'd feed your own family," she explained.

Last year, the Salvation Army food shelf and hot lunch programs provided more than 87,000 meals to those in need. And many of those people were children.

FoodShare Month is the largest food drive in the state, and gives food shelves a chance to earn a proportional match from the campaign.

The Duluth Salvation Army is hoping to bring in $8,500 in monetary donations and 4000 pounds of food.

Donations can be made by mail or in person at 215 South 27th Ave. West, Duluth, MN 55806.
Credit card donations can be made by phone at 218-722-7934 or online:
