Shelby Gene Boswell, the man accused of shooting another man during a funeral on the Fond du Lac reservation, has been indicted on federal charges.

The 28-year-old is now charged with possessing and discharging a firearm in a school zone and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Boswell was scheduled for a hearing Friday afternoon in a federal courthouse in St. Paul.

School was not in session, but the incident on Oct. 18 put several nearby school buildings in lockdown.

"Boswell knowingly and with reckless disregard for the safety of others, discharged a firearm on the grounds of Fond du Lac Head Start which is within a distance of 1,000 feet of the grounds of Fond du Lac Ojibwe High School," a press release said.

The statement said because he has a prior felony conviction, he was not supposed to have a firearm or ammunition at any time.

He was already charged in state court with first- and second-degree felony assault, third- and fifth-degree possession of drugs, possession of a firearm despite being convicted of a crime of violence, and introduction of drugs into a jail.
