Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College welcomed their fourth and new president with a special presentation ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

Stephanie Hammitt started serving as interim president in July 2018 after the retirement of the previous president, Larry Anderson.

Hammitt was chosen to serve as the permanent president in November. She has been with the college since 1990. Hammitt has served in a number of roles, including vice president of Finance and Administration, chief financial officer, director of fiscal operations, and the Tribal College’s Board of Directors.

Hammitt is a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. She said she felt emotional and overwhelmed by the support from the college.

“It’s quite the honor. I love working here and I never thought I’d be in this position,” said Hammitt.

Hammitt also said she is looking forward to having the college participate in different initiatives.

"I think we just want to continue working on all the good things we’ve done so far. We are part of achieving the dream and student holistic supports program. We want to decrease the equity gap between certain populations like native students, student athletes, and housing students. Reduce the achievement gap there and just continue building on all the good things we have going on,” said Hammitt.

Tribal representatives, higher education administrators, and students were part of the presentation ceremony. It featured a pipe ceremony, drum song, transferring of the presidential feather stick, and remarks from several college and tribal leaders.
