Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours to check on hidden areas within the construction.

According to the department, the church has not been used in several years, and was unoccupied at the time.

One woman and former parishioner who lives in the neighborhood told Eyewitness News that the church is 125 years old, and housed several different denominations.
