Cloquet Home Sustains "Significant Smoke Damage" in Fire

Updated: January 13, 2020 01:50 PM

The Cloquet Area Fire District says a house sustained "significant smoke damage", and a collapsed roof due to a fire and heavy snow on the roof Sunday evening.

Firefighters from several departments battled the fire at 318 Avenue E. The fire could be seen for some distance on Sunday afternoon.

Fire could be seen coming from under the eaves on one corner of the house, and at one point, firefighters cut a hole in the roof, revealing large flames beneath.

In a Facebook post, the Cloquet Area Fire District says multiple roof layers and heavy snow made extinguishing the fire difficult. Crews also had difficulty accessing a working fire hydrant due to tall snow banks and frozen hydrants. The closest working hydrant was two blocks away.

Crews remained on scene overnight, and the fire was extinguished by Monday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Cloquet, Scanlon, and Carlton fire departments were on the scene.
