The fire happened Thursday evening at a mobile home on Carlton Road in the Town of Evergreen, which is northwest of Spooner.  The Washburn County Sheriff's Office says smoke was covering the home when authorities arrived, and a deputy could see fire through a window.

A deputy and an officer were able to see two unconscious people in the home, but debris slowed their efforts to remove them from the structure.  They removed a door from its hinges and were then able to remove a male and a female.

The body of another male was later found in the debris and taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The two people who were rescued from the home remained in critical condition as of Friday.  Their names have not yet been released.

"It is without a doubt that if not for the efforts of all officers, Fire and EMS initially on scene, this tragedy may have claimed the life of two other people. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of the victim and hope for a speedy recovery for those in the hospital," said Sheriff Terry Dryden in a news release.

The state Fire Marshal is working with Washburn County investigators to determine the cause of the fire.
