The crash happened near the intersection of Highway 2 and Fairview Drive at about 1:49 p.m.  The Gogebic County Sheriff's Office says the driver of an eastbound vehicle lost control and spun into the westbound lanes, colliding with another vehicle.

Bessemer firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the eastbound vehicle, 41-year-old Rex Robert Smith of Wakefield.  Smith was then taken to the Ironwood hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and a passenger in the westbound vehicle, 86-year-old Alvin Liikanen and 87-year-old Barbara Liikanen of Ironwood, suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.  They were taken to the Ironwood hospital for treatment.

The highway was detoured for several hours following the crash for an investigation.  The sheriff's office said speed and reckless driving are believed to have been factors in the crash, and they are continuing to investigate with assistance from the Michigan State Police.

The sheriff's office said Good Samaritans assisted at the scene until additional first responders arrived.  Besides the agencies mentioned above, Ironwood Public Safety, Beacon Ambulance, and the Michigan DNR assisted at the scene.
