Authorities say the victim from an apartment fire in Ely on Wednesday evening died as a result of medical complications.
David Curtis Cashman, 70 of Ely died before the fire, according to the Ely Fire Department.
The Ely Fire Department was dispatched at 5:00 to a report of a fire at the Grahek Apartments in Ely. Authorities say there were initial reports of flames and smoke coming from the windows of a third story apartment.
"I just remember us standing outside in different places and looking and I was even right next to the building next door looking at his apartment window, saw smoke coming out," Michael Palto, a resident who was displaced for a night, said.
Authorities say the residents of the apartment were able to be safely evacuated to the nearby Ely-Bloomenson Hospital. A representative with the Red Cross said they helped 11 residents find somewhere to stay overnight. The Adventure Inn and Super 8 in Ely took in the residents.
Residents were allowed back into their apartments Thursday afternoon.
The cause of the fire appeared to be due to smoking materials and was ruled accidental.
The Ely Fire Department wants to remind people to have an active escape plan, practice that plan on a regular basis, and have working smoke detectors.
