Transportation, facilities, and special education are important for the success of any school district. On Monday, Duluth School District officials met with local legislators about making sure there is sufficient funding for these.

Duluth Public Schools Superintendent Bill Gronseth says the district still has needs not being met, specifically with transportation, facilities, and special education.

Gronseth says looking at next year's budget there are challenges in funding them, and he is asking for the state's help.

Gronseth told Rep. Liz Olson, Sen. Erik Simonson, and Sen. Thomas Bakk that the school district has apparent issues in funding special education. He says he wishes they had gotten further with funding for special education in the last legislative session.

Gronseth says a new formula implemented in 2016 put the district in a "unique position."

"Because of that we have had to make reductions in areas all across the district. Transportation, facilities, our curriculum department, and so if we're able to get that fixed, we'll be able to address other issues in the district," said Gronseth.

Gronseth also says that emersion programs in the district are popular and growing, but adds that is also adding financial strain on the district.

Gronseth emphasized that the school district is seeing higher student enrollment and working to address the achievement gap and graduation rates.

He added that next year the school district will likely be at a deficit.
