One of America's favorite grocery stores is now in Duluth. Aldi opened its first ever store in Duluth Thursday.
A number of people lined up at Aldi to be part of the ribbon cutting ceremony. Although it was a little rainy, these shoppers were determined to be the first to welcome Aldi to Duluth.
To celebrate the opening of Aldi, the store awarded golden tickets to the first 100 customers who shopped at the store. Each ticket had Aldi gift cards of various amounts. Customers also toured the store and entered into on-site sweepstakes for chances to win yearly supplies of Aldi produce.
This new store, located at 1724 Mall Drive, is part of the company's $3.4 billion investment plan to open an additional 900 stores across the country. Aldi says these new stores will create 25,000 new jobs.
Aldi boasts of a new and modernized look for the Duluth store. "Customers will notice a focus on fresh items, including robust produce, dairy and bakery sections and more room for customers' favorite products," the store said in a release. "Aldi stores will also feature a modern design, open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials."
Aldi stores may appear a little different from other grocery stores. The store has cart systems that customers will have to insert a quarter to release a cart from the corral. Customers will then receive the quarter back when they return their carts. The store says these practices are "cost-saving practices."
The Duluth Aldi store will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Sundays.
The chain also has stores in Superior and Grand Rapids.
