If you love loons and spend time in Itasca County, the DNR needs your help!

They're looking for volunteer observers to count loons during the annual survey. Volunteers will count loons for for one to four hours on one day between July 2 and 12, between 5 a.m. and noon.

They need volunteers to work on 14 specific lakes in Itasca County: Brush Shanty, Carpics, Copenhagen, East, Heinen, Little Clubhouse, Little Dick, Little East, Moon, Slauson, Snow, Three Island, Unnamed 31-0498, and Unnamed 31-0661

They've been doing this for 20 years to keep track of loons in six parts of Minnesota.

To sign up as a loon survey volunteer and select a lake, go to the DNR’s loon monitoring program page and click on "Volunteer Map." People considering volunteering can contact northeast regional loon monitoring coordinator Bry Persing at 218-735-3962 with any questions.
