A Deer River man faces a second degree murder charge for the death of a four-year-old child. Kevin Daniel Jackson, 28, is accused of killing his girlfriend's son.

Authorities say that they responded to a home in Inger on Wednesday evening, on the report of a non-responsive child. When officers arrived, the boy was in his mother's arms. Despite CPR, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies received information from medical personnel that the child may have been suffocated to death.

According to the criminal complaint, the mother and Jackson allegedly had done methamphetamine the night before. She reported waking up, and finding her son lying on the living room couch, wrapped in blankets.

A witness living in the home told authorities that he saw Jackson standing over the boy, and a short time later, also holding the boy.

The complaint went on to say when investigators asked Jackson what he thought happened, he responded he did not know.

The Itasca County Sheriff's office investigated, along with help from the MN BCA.

Jackson made his first appearance in court on Friday. The court set bail at $2,000,000 without conditions. He has a lengthy criminal history, and the courts also said he has a history of not attending chemical dependency, opioid, and mental health treatment. Plus he has multiple probation violations.
