The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says officers were dispatched to the lake, in the Greenwood Bay area, around 5:25 p.m Tuesday. A resident on a boat reportedly noticed Darrell Pfannenstein, 58, standing in a shallow area, struggling to get back on his jet ski.

Authorities say the resident went over to him and offered to help, but Pfannenstein declined. A short time later, the resident decided to boat over to the same area again. As the boat approached, the person noticed the 58-year-old, wearing a personal flotation device, face down and unresponsive in the water.

The sheriff's office says Pfannenstein, from St. Joseph, Minnesota, was transported to shore. Life-saving efforts by medical personnel, but was later pronounced dead.

Authorities are investigating.
