Monday marks day one of tax season and Community Action Duluth kicked off the day with their free tax preparation service.

The free program has over 70 volunteers helping families prepare their tax returns.

The service is available to Minnesota and Wisconsin residents who make under $56,000 a year.

It is open Mondays and Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m.

This year, Community Action Duluth is implementing a lottery system to help cut down the long lines.

"You will have the opportunity to draw a number blindly out of a hat. If you draw number one, you get to have your tax prepared done first. If you draw number five, you go fifth. This is to prevent having people wait long hours in line. There's no need to show up early is the important point," said Zayla Asquith-Heinz, the tax site supervisor.

As always, making sure you have all your tax documents is important. You have to bring your W-2 form, a copy of last year's tax returns, a state issued ID, your income statements, social security card, and proof of health insurance.

The service is available through April 15.

Community Action Duluth helped over 1,000 residents with their taxes last year.
