Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau has expressed deep concern about rail-line blockades that have disrupted transport services across the country.

Speaking to reporters in Toronto on Friday, Garneau said he hoped for a peaceful resolution to the impasse over a Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline in northern British Columbia that would cross the traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation.

Canadian National Railway Co. was forced to close significant parts of its Canadian network as the blockades impeded rail lines. Via Rail says the decision also affects its passenger service in Canada, which mostly uses CN track.

Industry groups have also expressed concern about the shutdown, with the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters association urging government officials to work with police to restore rail service.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada "recognises the right to protest but (it is) a country of the rule of law."
